Friday Sept 30
On our way to Vik, we stopped by Vatnajökull National Park again for a hike to Svartifoss, with its stunning array of basalt columns. This was the first 'wooded" hike we had done, with small birch trees and shrubs as well as an occasional evergreen. I enjoyed the smell and noticed that there were birds flitting around us. Hiking a little further up to Sjónasker, we could see to the ocean with the wide sandur or glacial floodplain stretching in both directions.
We stopped at Fjaròrárglúfur, a lush green canyon carved over a million years ago, to explore. Unable to walk along the canyon floor, we climbed to the rim for majestic views.
An hour before sunset we reach Vik and find the road to Reynisfjara, the black pebble beach, with sea stacks. Do you see trolls caught in the sun? Here the basalt columns are reminiscent of a church organ and others are perfect for sitting.
