Wednesday Sept 28
Last night was incredible with swirling greens and blues sweeping across the sky right in front of us. It started as a glow, and then like otherworldly magic, danced in spirals and waves - nature's fireworks. Two nights ago Tom and I had seen them in Myvatn, but the show was brief and our vantage point not as expansive. Bill and Mary joined us on our balcony for the display, and it was like the Fourth of July!
Now that we are near Vatnajökull National Park and it's huge ice cap, glaciers are our focus. Having planned a guided glacier walk for tomorrow, we decided to explore the nearby Fláajökull glacial tongue ourselves. Crossing over its river via a suspension bridge, we hiked across the glacial moraine - large gray boulders, mounds and mud - to the face of the glacier. How the temperature changes with the wind sweeping over the ice. It is bittersweet knowing, seeing how far the glaciers have retreated. The shapes and forms we see in the ice are fascinating. Being cautious around the ice, we found our own mini ice cave on the edge and were amazed.
Anxious for a hot pool in the wild experience, we found the four pools at Hoffell, each a different temperature, complete with changing room and a box for 500 kr (about $4.50) admission. The pools were small, big enough for five, so we met fellow travellers - Boston, Milan, Japan.......
After an spectacular sunset and a repeat langoustine dinner in Höfn, we drove on to our next hotel.
